During the COVID-19 lockdowns, we introduced free iolite licences to help students who were unable to access their laboratories. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and over the past five years we have provided more than 1,800 student licences to students around the world.

To ensure that we can continue offering these licences, we are updating the conditions of the student licence.

Education Licence Required

Each student licence must now be associated with a valid Education Licence, typically held by the student’s laboratory manager or supervisor. Each Education Licence can be associated with up to five student licences.

The Education Licence holder is responsible for asking students to deregister their licences when they no longer need them, such as after graduation. This allows the licence to be reassigned to another student.

Application Requirements

When applying, students must:

• Include the details of the Education Licence they will use.
• CC their supervisor or laboratory manager.
• Include proof of their current enrolment such as a copy of their academic enrolment info (with sensitive details redacted) or a photo of their student ID with a valid expiry date.¹
• Contact us from their official institutional or student email address.

Applications sent from personal email services, such as Gmail, 163.com, or QQ.com, may not be accepted.

Students must also agree that the licence will:

• Be used only for work directly related to their degree (so, no part-time work in the lab, or work for others in their research group, etc.)
• Be used only on their personal computer (so, no lab or shared computers, etc.)

Applications that do not include the required information may not be able to be processed.

Processing Times

To keep the student licence programme sustainable, applications are processed in batches, usually every few weeks. Please allow up to two weeks for a response before contacting us for an update.
